NFT Loyalty Programs: What the 2026 Consumer Study Shows
Consumers value NFT rewards for symbolism and belonging more than cash-like benefits, but the evidence has clear limits

NFT-based loyalty programmes give customers blockchain-recorded tokens as rewards, proof of participation or access to exclusive benefits. A 2026 study in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services suggests the appeal lies less in the token's monetary value than in its symbolic and social meaning. A survey of 400 participants and a conjoint analysis found that consumers valued personalisation and artistic value more than traditional monetary rewards. The study is exploratory, and its mediation analysis did not show a significant indirect effect through loyalty programmes. Brands should read it as a design hypothesis, not as proof of higher retention.
What an NFT Adds to a Loyalty Programme
An NFT, or non-fungible token, is a token whose instances are distinguishable from one another. The ERC-721 standard, which became Final on Ethereum, defines a common interface for tracking and transferring such tokens, so that wallets and applications can work with any compliant contract. Each token has its own identifier and ownership record.
In a loyalty context, a token can record something specific: a purchase, an event attendance or an achievement. Sealo, a platform for brands and creators, describes its own product as a way to create, send and sell NFTs as proof of purchase, participation or achievements, and to track and reward customer loyalty. That is a vendor description, not independent evidence of results.
What the 2026 Study Measured
Telli and Aydin published the study in volume 90 of the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services (2026, article 104710, DOI 10.1016/j.jretconser.2025.104710). The authors used a mixed-methods design: a survey of 400 participants to test hypotheses, a conjoint analysis to evaluate consumer preference structures, and in-depth interviews with industry experts to build a framework for NFT-based loyalty programmes.
Symbolic Value Goes Beyond the Reward
According to the abstract, consumers perceive NFTs as more than simple digital rewards. They value the symbolic meaning of a token and the sense of social belonging it can create. For a loyalty team, the practical question is whether the token communicates status, identity or a shared experience, not only whether it carries a discount.
Uniqueness, Innovativeness and Displayability
The abstract identifies three consumer motivations as key drivers of interest: the need for uniqueness, innovativeness and the displayability of NFTs. These are attitudes measured in the survey, so they describe what consumers say matters to them, not what they will do after a programme launches.
Abstract Benefits Outweigh Traditional Rewards in the Conjoint Analysis
The conjoint analysis found that consumers were more drawn to abstract benefits, such as personalisation and artistic value, than to traditional monetary rewards. Conjoint results depend on the attributes and levels the researchers chose to test, so they describe relative preferences within that design rather than a universal ranking.
Where the Evidence Is Weaker
Three limits matter for anyone using this research in a business plan.
- Mediation was not confirmed. The authors report that the indirect paths running through loyalty programmes were not significant. The study therefore does not show that NFT rewards improve loyalty outcomes through the loyalty programme itself.
- Behaviour was not measured in the abstract. The reported evidence concerns attitudes and preferences. It does not report measured redemption rates, repeat purchases or retention.
- Engagement can be driven by money. A separate study on NFTs in brand-customer interactions, published by Emerald, concludes that engagement within branded NFT communities was largely influenced by financial motivations rather than emotional bonds or brand loyalty. That finding sits uneasily with the symbolic-value result and should be tested in each programme.
SignorCrypto Analysis: Design Implications
The evidence supports three cautious design choices, which are our interpretation rather than conclusions stated by the authors:
- Tie the token to a real moment. A token that records a purchase, an attendance or a milestone gives the symbolic value the study describes a concrete origin.
- Do not sell the token as an investment. A rewards programme that stresses monetary value risks attracting the financially motivated engagement the Emerald study describes, with weaker brand attachment.
- Measure outcomes you can verify. Track redemptions, repeat engagement and opt-out rates against a comparable non-NFT programme before assuming the token improves loyalty. Onboarding friction, such as wallet creation, is not measured in the abstract and remains an open design question.
FAQ
Not necessarily. An NFT is a unique record, not a unit of a fungible currency. Whether a token is transferable or resellable, and how those terms are presented to consumers, determines its legal and consumer-protection profile. That depends on jurisdiction and should be reviewed with qualified counsel.
Does this study prove NFT loyalty programmes increase retention? No. The abstract reports attitudes and preference structures, and its mediation analysis through loyalty programmes was not significant.
